A NEW use is being sought for a Perth property familiar to generations of residents. The former toll house on West Bridge Street, at the Bridgend side of Perth Bridge, was last used as a grocery shop. Now lying empty, Perth and Kinross Council is hoping new life can be brought to the site. As well as playing its own part in Perth’s history, the building marks an interesting piece of early motoring history. Mounted on the wall is a copy of a bye-law, which enacted “that no locomotive pass upon or over Perth Bridge between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm and that, at other times, the person in charge of such, shall send a man with a red flag to the opposite end of the bridge from that on which he is to enter, warning all persons concerned of the approach of the locomotive.” Signed by the provost, the fine for each offence against the bye-law was £5. |
