INVERKEITHING HIGH School remained closed yesterday in the wake of a major gas leak but is to reopen today for lessons. Pupils were evacuated on Monday morning after contractors working on a new primary school within the grounds damaged a six-inch gas main. Two pupils were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of gas inhalation and others were treated by ambulance staff. Rector Lindsay Roy, who has demanded safety assurances from contractors Emblem, called a meeting yesterday to decide whether the school should reopen today. Mr Roy expressed concern for pupils’ safety after the gas leak, which followed a burst water main the previous week. Emblem confirmed there would be an investigation into Monday’s incident. A team from Scotland Gas Networks completed a permanent repair on Tuesday night. The fire service, which had been on standby since Monday morning, has now left the scene. A spokesman for Scotland Gas Networks said earlier yesterday, “A permanent repair was done last night. “A team are still there but are in the final stages and are just tidying up. “The roads have been reopened.” A spokeswoman for Fife Council confirmed last night that the high school would reopen “for business as usual” today. |
