University to stand trial on safety

ST ANDREWS University Court is to stand trial on charges relating to an electrical explosion alleged to have injured two workers.

The explosion is said to have occurred in the new service tower of its Purdie Building early last year.

It stands accused of failing to ensure the health and safety and welfare of an employee and two workers of a firm sub-contracted by it to carry out electrical installations.

The firm, D. H. Morris & Co. Ltd, of Bellfield Street, Dundee, is also accused of failing to ensure the health and safety and welfare of two of its employees, who were consequently injured, and two employees of the university, who were exposed to risk of injury from the explosion.

The university court denied the charges when the case was called at Cupar Sheriff Court yesterday. Trial was set for April 25.

The D. H. Morris case was continued without plea for one month.

It is alleged that during live testing a probe bridged between terminals of a switched fuse assembly a short circuit took place resulting in an electrical explosion. The charges relate to a period up to February 2.
