A SERVICE was held last night to install the new vice-provost of St Paul’s Cathedral in Dundee. Canon Douglas Mackay was formally appointed by the Bishop of Brechin, the Rt Rev John Mantle, at a ceremony at the cathedral. A well-known figure in the Carnoustie area where he served as rector of Holy Rood Church for 30 years, Canon Mackay was originally a jeweller but left the trade to train for the priesthood. He attended theological college and served at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Inverness. His first full charge was as rector of Gordon Chapel, Fochabers. It was during this period he was elected synod clerk of the diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness. With it he gained the first of his four canonries. Canon Mackay became rector at Holy Rood Church in 1972. During his time in Carnoustie, he served as president of the local Red Cross society and was named as the town’s citizen of the year. |
