Refereeing honour for PE teacher

Mr Curran.

A PE teacher from Dundee has had the honour of being invited to referee the men’s hockey final at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Ged Curran (39) teaches at St John’s High School and has been a referee in the game since 1992.

Following various international appearances he joined the games team of referees and has now been chosen to umpire the men’s final between Australia and Pakistan.

Taking part in this major event will boost Mr Curran’s chances of being invited to join the world panel of referees, which will place him in the world’s top 14.

Teresa Little, head of the PE department at St John’s, said the school is very proud to see Mr Curran receiving such a high honour.

“Ged is absolutely delighted with the news and he has the full support of both the pupils and staff at St John’s.

“The kids are always asking how he is doing and are very happy to follow his progress.”

The final will be televised at 2 am tomorrow.
