A BUSINESS MAN is claiming a national first as Perth bids to become a centre of international attention for gemstones and jewellery. For many years the largest gemmological conference in the UK has taken place in Perth, with delegates travelling from England, Europe and the USA. Now, a new jewellery valuation laboratory has opened in Perth and is the first of its type in Scotland, and perhaps the UK. Owner Adrian Smith has 30 years’ experience in the field, is chairman of the Association of Jewellery Appraisers and has opened the new laboratory at the Algo Business Centre. The public can bring their treasures to be examined by an expert, on a strict appointment basis. “This business is unique in many ways,” said Mr Smith. “The appraisal is carried out while the client waits so they can watch the valuer at work. “People seem to like actually seeing how professional appraisals are undertaken. “We do not buy or sell jewellery—we just appraise and value it—and this enables us to remain totally unbiased and independent.” The Association of Jewellery Appraisers, with members all over Britain, also has its base in Perth. In April, Perth will host the International Professional Appraisal Software meeting, attracting appraisers from home and abroad. |
