THE SCOTTISH short track speed skating championships attracted a crowd yesterday to the Dundee Ice Arena. Teams from Ayr and Stirling, featuring skaters of all ages, travelled to Dundee to compete against home skaters and go head-to-head in the contest of fast paced action. This is the fourth year Dundee has hosted the championships and general manager Jack Dryburgh said that the Dundee Ice Arena is a unique place for the skaters to compete. “We are the only 60x30 active arena in Scotland and we are lucky to have a full size Olympic track,” he said. “With the Winter Olympics in Turin and the Dancing on Ice programme, we have noticed an increase in people wanting to take up skating.” Dundee City Council leisure and arts convener Councillor Charles Farquhar was on hand to present prizes to winners at the end of the day. Junior winners—1 Greg Ireland, from Dundee, 2 Jennifer Miller, from Ayr, 3 Samantha Inch, from Ayr. Senior winners—1 Alan Dobbie, from Stirling, 2 Scott Anderson, from Dundee, 3 Elise Christie, from Ayr. |
