Century-old name will remain after takeover

OIL AND paint distributor R C Stiven and Company has been taken over for an undisclosed sum by Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Company (DP&L).

The move follows the imminent retirement of managing partner Sandy Stiven, who was described as a major influence in the Dundee company’s growth over many years.

DP&L said the Faraday Street business, which was established in 1897 to supply whale oil to the jute industry, would retain its name for trading purposes.

Mr Stiven said, “While I am sad to be leaving the firm that has been a huge part of my life for so long, I am happy it is going to the best of homes.”

“I know that DP&L will uphold the service standards of R C Stiven and that they are committed to developing the company.

“The business is in safe hands.”

DP&L, whose headquarters is in East Dock Street, said the acquisition will considerably enlarge its industrial supplies arm.

Managing director Alasdair Chalmers said he was delighted to ensure R C Stiven will keep its strong ties to the city.

“We are very pleased to be buying a business which fits so well with our existing industrial products distributor Allison-Gray and which enjoys such reputation,” he said.

“It is not unusual for Dundee companies to be sold outside the city but Stivens will remain locally owned and that’s very important.

“Everyone is looking forward to them being part of the group.”

A general manager is to be appointed in the near future to run the operation.

Over the years, R C Stiven was expanded to include lubricants, paints and cleaning materials.

In 1979, the company bought DS Bryson.

Its product range went on to become one of the most extensive in the country.
