Chance to muse on Big Weekend

MUSE, SNOW PATROL, Razorlight, Keane, Sugababes and Pink are among the top acts rumoured to be playing the Radio 1 Big Weekend at Camperdown Park next month after an unofficial leaked running order was circulated on the internet yesterday.

The line-up for the massive event, which will see 30,000 pop and rock fans converge on Camperdown on May 13 and 14, is a closely-guarded secret which was not due to be announced for another fortnight.

Radio 1 insisted yesterday that none of the bands playing is confirmed and the rumours are just that—rumours.

“Until we make our announcement on the Chris Moyles show on Monday, April 24, nothing is 100% confirmed,” a spokesman for Radio 1 said.

A full list of the bands apparently booked appeared on websites yesterday, prompting a frenzy of Emails which circulated throughout the country within minutes.

Among the other acts reported to be playing were Primal Scream, The Streets, The Zutons, The Editors, current number one single artists Gnarls Barclay, Bloc Party and former Libertine Carl Barat’s new band Dirty Pretty Things.

Even Dundee’s own teenage sensations The View are on the list being circulated. However, last night their management was tight-lipped.

The event will see 15,000 fans converging on Camperdown Park on the Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are free and details of how to get them will be released by Radio 1 following their official announcement of the line-up.

Dundonians and those living in the Tayside area will be allocated the majority of the tickets. However, music fans are expected to converge on the city from across the continent.

Council chiefs are to use next month’s mail-out of tickets to promote the city to thousands of young people, with the event providing an opportunity to put Dundee in the national spotlight when the successful applicants receive their tickets for the two-day extravaganza.

Along with their tickets, flyers promoting the city will be posted out, giving travel advice, instructions on how to get to Camperdown Park and other useful information.

Last year’s event in Sunderland was worth an estimated £9 million to the local economy. The benefits are still being felt.

In addition to the two days of live music over two stages, Radio 1 will broadcast shows from across Scotland in the lead-up.

Across the weekend itself, specialist DJs will be live at the festival and will host after-show parties in Dundee’s clubs and venues.

In addition, on May 12, local bands will be showcasing their talents at several venues around the city centre, watched by hundreds of people in events sponsored by Radio 1.
