A FASCINATING event at the Caledonian Railway, Brechin, promises to bring enthusiasts from all over Britain to the Angus tourist attraction. The annual Diesel Gala on Sunday, April 30, and Monday, May 1, gives the public a rare chance to enjoy a ride behind the Caledonian Railway’s unique collection of heritage diesel locomotives, which date back to the 1950s and 60s. All of the diesels at the railway worked regularly in Scotland hauling passenger and freight trains until their withdrawal by British Rail in the early 1980s. Years of hard work by volunteers of the Caledonian Railway has secured one of the largest single collections of these important locomotives, many of which have been repatriated from England. During the gala the preserved locomotives will be hauling trains over the four-mile branch line from Brechin to Bridge of Dun to an intensive timetable. Seventies-style tickets and an on-train bar will help to truly recreate the experience of travelling in Scotland at that time. A limited number of passengers who want a closer look can ride in the cab of one of the locomotives during the journey. Members of the railway will be on hand to answer any questions and to talk to any potential volunteers.
