Music’s top stars headline Dundee festival

DUNDEE WILL take centre stage in the nation’s musical calendar next month after Radio 1 announced a star- studded international line-up for their Big Weekend festival at Camperdown Park.

Former Dundee band Snow Patrol are among the main headliners along with US singer Pink, Muse and Keane on May 13 and 14.

Pop band Sugababes supply more glamour on the main stage, while Scots rockers Primal Scream and indie bands Razorlight, Bloc Party and The Streets are also on the bill.

There is also a place on the In New Music We Trust stage on Sunday for Dundee band The View, capping an amazing year for the teenage four-piece, who have signed megabucks recording and publishing deals.

The eagerly-awaited announcement will now spark an almighty scramble for tickets today when DJ Chris Moyles reveals details on his show of how to apply for the 15,000 tickets available for each day.

Announcing the bands, he said, “We go to a part of the UK where no one ever goes, and I mean that with respect.

“We went to Derry and Sunderland and Birmingham, all those places, and they go down a storm.

“Corinne Bailey Rae, one of the most talked-about artists in the UK, Gnarls Barclay, is coming, the awesome Orson, the brilliant Razorlight, the amazing live band Muse and the fantastic Snow Patrol are all on the main stage on Saturday.

“On Sunday, one of my favourite bands, The Feeling, are playing—Preston and the Ordinary Boys, Sugababes, another brilliant live band Feeder, Editors, Pink and Keane, who are back with a brand-new album.

“It’s all free as well. We want the majority of people going to be from Dundee ‘cos that’s where it’s happening, so it’s only fair.

“I’m gonna get a little area backstage with my chair and my beer and sandwiches and I’m gonna do nothing—Just watch the bands.

Pink is the only act on the bill who has played the Big Weekend before.

She said, “I love playing big shows with lots of crazy people.

“I’m sure it’s gonna be like that. It’ll be great.”

Keiran Webster (19) of The View said, “I think the tent holds about 5000 people so that will be our biggest crowd yet and it’s amazing it’s in Dundee!”

Across the weekend Radio 1’s DJs will host parties in Dundee’s venues and 1Xtra BBC will stage a club night in Fat Sam’s.

Festival tickets will be available from tomorrow at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1.

Half a million applications are expected.

On the Saturday night, Radio 1 will come live from the London nightclub for a six hours of top DJs such as Judge Jules, Fergie, Pete Tong and Dave Pearce.
