| Dundee players in limbo as meeting is postponed | |||

By Graeme Dey DUNDEE HAVE cancelled a planned meeting with half-a-dozen senior players, who they hope can be persuaded to accept wage cuts. The sit-down, which should have taken place tomorrow, is expected to be rescheduled for next week. “Something else, personal business, has come up which meant I had to cancel,’’ explained chief executive Peter Marr last night. “But I’d like to get this done before the end of next week.’’ The meeting, when it is staged, will involve Tam McManus, Lee Wilkie, Steven Robb, Simon Lynch, Garry Brady and Derek Soutar, or alternatively their agents, along with representatives of the PFA. As McManus revealed to Courier Sport yesterday there is expected to be widespread resistance to wage-cut moves, not least of all because a number of the players concerned accepted salary reductions a year ago. The upshot could well be the departure from Dens of at least some of these individuals for Marr is adamant costs have to be reduced if Dundee are to remain in good order with bankers HBOS. “Because of the cup run we had we are sitting quite nicely with the bank at the moment,’’ he said, “But we have to ensure that remains the case. “Having had a season in the First Division we have a basic idea of what our income is likely to be next year. “What we have to do now is keep costs down so that we achieve break even.’’ Former Dundee United boss Tommy McLean has emerged as a contender for the managerial vacancy at Dens. But Marr revealed that, with only one game left to play, the club are in no hurry to appoint a replacement for Alan Kernaghan. “With season tickets to be sold we obviously want to get someone in place but it’ll be a few weeks yet before we’ve sorted that out,’’ he said. Meanwhile, the Dark Blues are set once again to raffle the right to have a name emblazoned across their strips. This season has seen the logo of the Forfar Roof Truss Company carried on club tops following a raffle which generated a five figure sum which almost matched that received from former backers Magners the previous year when the club were in the SPL. |
