Erskine ruling to create 5000 jobs

WEST OF Scotland communities are pressing ahead with economic development plans after the abolition of tolls on the Erskine bridge.

Councils believe tolls removal will make a significant contribution to the creation of up to 5000 jobs over five years.

The regeneration plans have won the support of First Minister Jack McConnell.

West Dunbartonshire Council leader Andy White said the end of the tolls four weeks ago has removed “a barrier to economic development” for the area.

The council’s campaign against the charges won backing from businesses, especially hauliers.

The aim is to regenerate large areas of degraded land, mostly former shipyards, on both sides of the river close to the bridge.

Councillor White said evidence suggests 5000 jobs will come in the next five years and a figure of 7500 is possible.

In the longer term, a capacity of 20,000 could be considered.

The long-term economic planning for the west of Scotland prompted Angus councillor Ian Angus to ask, “Could it be that there are forces within the Scottish Executive that do not want to see such a competitive advantage for the west central belt being eroded by the removal of tolls on the east coast?”
