READERS CONTINUE to show strong support for our Scrap the Tolls campaign. Stickers are being displayed on vehicles across the east of Scotland and readers are making good use of our online voting system. Thousands have registered their support for removing the tolls from the Forth and Tay bridges to bring them into line with the Skye and Erskine bridges. Several hundred have also told us they want tolls kept on the bridges. So far, 81% of readers who have voted online want the tolls scrapped. Thousands have also filled in and returned petition forms to The Courier’s Scrap the Tolls campaign team. Scottish ministers are in the process of deciding the format of a further inquiry into the impact of bridge tolls after MSPs voted to keep them. Readers with a view on tolls can Email scrap thetolls@thecourier. co.uk or write to us at Scrap the Tolls Campaign, The Courier, 80 Kingsway East, Dundee, DD4 8SL. Emails supporting our campaign arrive daily and one from reader Alan Evans is typical of the thousands received over the last few weeks. Mr Evans wrote, “The Courier’s robust stance on the Tay Bridge tolls has been very, very welcome. “Local press at its very best. “The arguments in favour of retaining the tolls are either weak and being applied inconsistently or just plain nonsense. “Statements including the prediction of an extra 10,000 vehicles per day using the bridge by 2011 are just not credible. Tavish Scott is demeaning his position by publicly repeating such rubbish. “Where is the evidence? “There may now be a hiatus before the further wasteful review begins. “However, you must keep up this fantastic momentum. “Critical analysis of all the ministers’ utterances is required combined with further pressure on our local MSPs.” |
