Layla finds fame in fitness

A KIRKCALDY woman has proved she is going from strength to strength in the fitness industry with success in two major body-building competitions.

Layla Docherty (32) won the Miss Scotland 2006 for Figure title at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on May 6 seven days after taking second place in the ProLab Classic event in Lochgelly.

Bulging biceps and washboard stomachs were everywhere to be seen at last Saturday’s event, which was organised by the National Amateur Body-Builders Association.

It was the many months of training and painstaking preparation that put Layla ahead of the other participants in the eyes of the judging panel.

The mother of two works as a fitness instructor at the Priory Park gym in Kirkcaldy, where she has spent the last few months trying to perfect her physique.

The tireless training schedule apart, Layla has also been on a strict protein diet, which includes chicken, risotto, broccoli and porridge.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s certainly been worth it,” Layla said.

“I’ve been training since I was 16 but it’s only been the last few years that it’s started to get more serious.

“The competition is about posing, but it’s mainly about how toned you are so I’m really happy to have finished second one weekend and then come first the following weekend.

“I train four times a week and obviously I do my own class, but diet is very important and you can’t have any rubbish.

“It’s hard going at times but I’m already looking forward to competing again next year.”

Her national triumph represents a major feat after she put a great deal of work into the ProLab Classic open bodybuilding event at the Lochgelly Centre a week earlier.

There, she did enough to claim second prize but never imagined the success that would come her way the following week.
