Token of surrender donated to museum

A SAMURAI sword that has been with a Perthshire family for over 50 years was yesterday handed over at Edinburgh Castle.

The “surrender” sword was presented to the late David MacDougall in his role as head of the Hong Kong government by the Japanese in a special ceremony at the end of the second world war.

Mr MacDougall was born in Perth and educated at St Andrews University, prior to joining the colonial service.

Two of his daughters, Ann Partridge, of Aberfeldy, and Jane Barclay, gave the sword to the National War Museum of Scotland, which is based at Edinburgh Castle, after hearing the museum had no such sword in its collection.
