Forth tolls work is on schedule

Traffic queues at the toll plaza as work goes on.

WORK ON the Forth Road Bridge’s new toll plaza is bang on schedule according to officials at the Forth Estuary Transport Authority.

The multi-million pound scheme will replace the existing booths with a state-of-the-art set-up capable of introducing electronic tolling on the crossing.

Contractors have been forced to work around the old tollbooths, leading to some delays for traffic.

A FETA spokesman told The Courier yesterday, “It is quite a complex operation, but so far everything is on schedule.

“We have to make sure we get everything right. Obviously any problems with the tolling system and the whole bridge would come to a standstill.

“The difficulty is, contractors have had to work around the existing tolls. It’s a bit like trying to change a ship’s engine while it is steaming full ahead.”

FETA said it was hoped the work would be complete by September.
