A PERTH registry office ceremony between two women was seen by a global TV audience at the weekend. Cindy Nicholson (24), of Dundee, and Jennyfer Van Gelder (26) from Holland took their vows on Saturday. Along with four other couples, their “wedding” was featured on the satellite TV channel Discovery Home and Health in a one-day event spotlighting gay marriages across the country. Cindy and Jennyfer met two years ago in a gay bar and have been inseparable ever since. Both driving instructors, they have also decided to go into business together. It was a case of second time around for the couple. Martial arts expert Cindy proposed to Jennyfer in 2004 but was turned down—only for the tables to be turned in April last year. Cindy said, “We agreed to get married on December 21, when civil partnerships first became legal, but we didn’t have the funds. So we agreed to set the date for June 3, and in January we saw a TV advert asking for couples getting married that day to call them. “We both laughed about it but I decided to call the company. A researcher then travelled up to speak to us and we were lucky enough to be accepted for the show.” The two women were taken to Loch Lomond, Holland and London to be interviewed. They were helped by Tayside hairdressers McIntyres and received advice from make-up artist Armand Beasley. In addition they were assisted by Ashling McCloy, fashion editor at Reveal magazine. Jennyfer is from Holland but was born in the Caribbean, which helped give the pair a theme for their reception. Cindy has worked for a number of TV personalities through her martial arts experience, including Michael Greco, who played Beppe in Eastenders. Cindy added, “One of the main reasons we agreed to do this was to put over the message that you don’t have to be stereotypical to be gay. We are both very feminine, but we happen to be in love with each other. “We think the civil partnership laws are a step in the right direction.” |
