Samuel should savour dream

DUNDEE UNITED’S Collin Samuel has been ordered to savour every second of his World Cup adventure as he prepares to join a very exclusive club, writes Ian Roache.

Tannadice boss Craig Brewster, despite a successful playing career both at home and abroad, did not pick up a cap for Scotland never mind experience the delights of football’s greatest tournament.

Brewster has told Samuel to realise how fortunate he is, regardless of how results turn out for his team Trinidad and Tobago.

They kick off their campaign against Sweden tomorrow before facing England and Paraguay.

The United boss is willing Samuel to make an impact on the tournament even though he thinks it is unlikely the Caribbean side will cause many upsets.

“All I can really say about Trinidad and Tobago’s chances is that it is going to be very, very hard for them,” said Brewster.

“They have two top European teams in England and Sweden to contend with and also a dangerous South American team in Paraguay so they will have their work cut out.

“But just getting to Germany is a remarkable achievement and Sammy knows everyone here is desperate for him to do well.

“He is about to play in a World Cup and only a tiny proportion of players ever get that opportunity.

“All I said to him before he went away was to enjoy every single minute of it.

“It is a chance in a lifetime and the vast majority of us—including myself, I may add—are only ever left dreaming about it.

“If Sammy has a good World Cup then his confidence will be sky high when he gets back and that will benefit the club as well, so it is in our interests to support Trinidad.”
