FOR PERTH football fans the highlight of the World Cup is fast approaching, and the BBC have decided to visit the Fair City to savour it. On Thursday evening, England will square up to underdogs Trinidad and Tobago. Many supporters need no extra reason to side with the minnows against the might of England, but St Johnstone fans have a strong one. They are to cheer on one of their own—striker Jason Scotland, who is in the Soca Warriors squad. Word has reached BBC Radio 4 current affairs programme PM and on Thursday its team will sample the big-match atmosphere at Perth pub Sportsters. Having set up a big screen in the beer garden, the South Methven Street bar has already become popular with World Cup followers. General manager Scott Mackenzie said, “They were looking for somewhere in Perth to do a live broadcast and I think they heard that Sportsters has been the most popular bar for people watching football. “They’ll be speaking to English people and Scots and they also want to find out more about the Jason Scotland connection.” A BBC spokeswoman said, “PM is a news and current affairs programme, fronted by Eddie Mair, which discusses the issues of the day. “We’ll be heading to Perth and finding out who people are supporting when England play Trinidad.” |
