DUNDEE’S APEX Hotel was host to some very special guests this weekend. Scotland’s first ever exhibition celebrating Dennis the Menace and other DC Thomson and Co Ltd characters took place as part of the city’s summer festival. Beano Mania demonstrated the changing face of Beano favourite Dennis through the ages in a series of screen prints by artist John Patrick Reynolds. The first Dennis the Menace story was printed in 1951 and the cheeky schoolboy’s appearance has gone through many updates over the years. Other characters in the exhibition included Gnasher, Minnie the Minx, the Bash Street Kids and Desperate Dan. Former Beano editor Euan Kerr was in attendance, along with artist Jimmy Glen. Mr Kerr spoke about the history of the Beano, while Mr Glen held an interactive art workshop. Sales manager Kim Wilkinson said, “There was a constant stream of people, and lot of members from the Beano Fan Club. “There were children’s activities on offer, including face painting, an art competition, cookie decoration, balloon art, a raffle and goody bags.” Dennis the Menace was in attendance, taking part in some of the activities. |
