Broughty father tells of family heartbreak

Gary Chambers and his Norwegian girlfriend, Hanne Carlsen.

A BROUGHTY Ferry man has spoken of his heartbreak after his son was killed in a road accident in Thailand—the latest in a long line of tragedies to befall his family this year, writes Lynne Stewart.

Gary Chambers (28) was on holiday with his Norwegian girlfriend, Hanne Carlsen (22), when they were fatally injured in a collision with a vehicle on Tuesday. A Thai man has been charged with dangerous driving.

Gary had recently bought a house in Prague, where he had lived for the past two years and had been with his girlfriend, who is training to be a doctor, for two years.

He had been due to return home to visit his family in Broughty Ferry today.

His parents, Tom and Fiona, and younger brothers Steven (26) and Scott (21), were all in a state of shock at the family home yesterday after learning of the double death.

Gary’s death is the latest in a series of family bereavements to befall the Chambers family.

Both Mr and Mrs Chambers have lost a parent this year and Mrs Chambers’ sister lost her battle with cancer.

Mr Chambers said, “It’s been a terrible time, but this is the worst of them all, to lose someone so young. We haven’t quite come to terms with it yet.”

Mr Chambers spoke of his pride for his son Gary, who he said was outgoing and enjoyed life to the full.

“If anybody lived their dream it was Gary.

“There was no barriers for him,” said Mr Chambers, who returned home from a business trip to Cardiff to be informed of the tragic news on Thursday night.

“He was thoughtful of everyone,” added his mother, Fiona.

“We are waiting to hear from the Foreign Office for more details,” said Mr Chambers.

“One man is in jail and has been charged with dangerous driving—but that’s no consolation to us.

“The two of them were learning diving in Thailand. Gary was very active and had a number of sporting interests. He had been in Spain learning to surf and he enjoyed snowboarding and hockey.

“We can’t quite believe that this has happened.

“I came home from Cardiff thinking that maybe one of the boys here had been in a car accident or something, but I never thought anything like this.”

Gary was educated at Seaview Primary and Monifieth High School before completing a degree in civil engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow.

He returned home to attend Abertay University and graduated with a Masters degree in Information Technology.

He worked in IT for DHL in London, and was transferred to Prague two years ago. There, he took up the post of IT account manager, responsible for the Middle East, which often required him to travel to Lebanon.
