Hotting up on and off Fife racetrack

KNOCKHILL IS enjoying a sizzling season this year —thanks only in part to one of the best summers for many years.

Things are also hotting up on the Fife track because of the calendar of top-quality events being hosted by the venue.

It’s put the quieteners on the long-standing reputation the track has for suffering from its own—and terminally bad—micro climate.

But according to PR manager Ray Smith, that reputation is somewhat unjust.

“Many people mention Knockhill and wet and windy weather in the same breath, as if that’s the norm, but it’s simply untrue.

“Even Sir Jackie Stewart mentioned it during his speech to a 400-strong audience at a dinner last week to celebrate 50 years of Scottish motorsport.

“But our inaugural Scottish Classic SpeedFair event attended by the Formula One legend last weekend was held in glorious sunshine.

“This was a fact not overlooked by the man himself who commented on how the setting was indeed spectacular, with views of the Forth bridges to the south and Ben Lomond to the west,” said Mr Smith.

Recent visitors to the British Superbikes also basked in glorious weather and this Sunday another British championship event heads to Knockhill in the shape of the Quaife MSA British RallyCross Championship—and one of the biggest problems could be dust.

Driving on a mix of tarmac and loose surfaces, the special four-wheel drive, 700 bhp cars are so fast that they can out-accelerate a Formula One car.
