A HISTORICAL walk to commemorate a famous battle which involved the actual Bonnie Dundee will take place today. The walk marking the 317th anniversary of the battle starts at noon and will recreate the march by the Jacobite army, which was led by John Graham of Claverhouse, from Blair Castle to the battlefield at Killiecrankie. A wreath will be laid to those who fell in the battle. Kenny Borthwick, Killiecrankie memorial walk organiser, said yesterday, “This event has been organised for six years and lets members of the public take part in re-living history. “During its time, the walk has been under different group names. This year it will be under the Crann Tara banner, which I am a committee member of. “It is a chance to walk the route taken by Dundee’s local hero John Graham of Claverhouse, Bonnie Dundee, and his Highland army. It should be remembered that Graham was the very first Jacobite. “Covenanters for years had portrayed this man as a demon with most people believing it all over Scotland until the facts were brought out and changed the way people now see him. “Leaving from Old Blair car park we will climb two miles up before sweeping round the hill of Lude and marching on to the battlefield, the sights are breathtaking. “At the battlefield within the grounds of Urrad house we will lay a wreath to the fallen, give a musket salute and piping before returning to Old Blair car park and marching to the tomb of John Graham, who unfortunately was killed in the battle, within the grounds of Blair Castle at St Brides Kirk. Here we will also lay a wreath to John Graham.” Historical speeches are given at various parts of the route, based on factual accounts of the battle. There will also be entertainment on in the evening from 7pm onwards. |
