EAST FIFE boss Dave Baikie said he was “not unhappy” to pick up just one point following a goalless draw with Stenhousemuir at New Bayview, but admitted there were lessons to be learnt. The home side looked likely to take the lead in three minutes with an effort by striker Kevin Gordon, but hopes where dashed when the ball landed on top of the net. The Fifers had another chance when Neil Jablonski shot from 20 yards but his attempt failed to trouble Stenhousemuir keeper William McCulloch. Minutes later, Ally Mitchell attempted to lob one home but McCulloch was quick to deny him. The Warriors’ Gareth Hutchison then tried to break the deadlock on 36 minutes but his volley was impressively blocked with a reflex save by keeper Iain Ross. East Fife fans were frustrated just before half time when a miscalculated, close-range shot by Paul Ritchie failed to hit the back of the net. The visitors looked more determined in the second half with Kevin Gordon, Iain Diack and Scott Crabbe creating a number of chances but they struggled to maintain possession. East Fife’s Jamie McGowan excited fans with a late header but it was nodded off the line by an alert David Murie. Baikie said, “Given it was our first game and we have 12 new players, I’m not unhappy with a point. “Admittedly, it will take time for the players to gel and there are lessons to be learnt after this game but on the whole I thought we created the better chances. “They’re all good players and we will get better. I’m confident they’ll make their mark in future games.” |
