By Bruce Fegen SUPERMAN AND Batman were among 15 people who were detected for alleged drink- driving in Fife last week. Police officers could hardly believe their eyes when they stopped cars containing two men dressed as the superheroes in the Anstruther area in the early hours of Sunday morning. The pair, who are in their early 20s and who are believed to have been at a fancy dress party, now face a court appearance. However, they weren’t the only people caught in Fife during the second week of the national Summer Safety Campaign. Incredibly, a 20-year-old man caught driving allegedly at 75mph in a 50mph zone near Dunfermline while well over the limit, was caught at the same location by the same officers the following day doing 95mph—and once again he was over the drink-driving limit. The number of people caught drink-driving in the second week of the campaign was 15—13 of them men. A total of 165 drivers were detected speeding in residential areas (20, 30, 40mph) and 132 were caught going too fast in a non-built up area. And despite the massive media coverage about using seatbelts, 74 adult drivers and 13 adult passengers were caught not using them. There were also four incidents where officers found children not wearing a belt in the back of a car. Fife road safety unit co-ordinator Janet Bowman, said, “It is disappointing that so many people are not wearing seatbelts. “Officers even came across an incident where there was a child in a pram in the back of a van. It wasn’t even secured and was moving about.” The driver was issued with a £30 fine and three penalty points. Chief Inspector Joe Swanston, head of Fife’s road policing, said, “We need people to tell us if someone has just got behind a wheel after drinking or information on people that regularly drink and drive. “It is disappointing that we are still detecting double figures of drink-drivers on a weekly basis, but it proves that our officers are being vigilant. “However, those who continue to drink and drive should be warned that I intend to continue a high level of enforcement activity throughout the region. “Drink-drivers risk the lives of us all each and every time they drink and drive, so be warned—if you drink and drive in Fife we’ll do our level best to catch you and bring you before a court. “We cannot stress highly enough the importance of pre-arranging transport if going out drinking to a social event, so there is no opportunity for drinking and driving.” If anyone sees someone drinking and then driving, they are asked to phone 999 with a description of the vehicle and, if known, the driver’s name. Police also ask anyone with information about someone who regularly drinks and drives, to Email hqosintelligenceoffice’@ fife.pnn.police.uk with details of the driver and vehicle. |
