AN ANTI-TOLLS campaign similar to The Courier’s is being run in Dundee, Oregon. Residents in the US are fighting a toll road plan, which authorities say, will reduce town centre traffic congestion. Courier reader Bob McWilliam has been following the Oregon campaign and provided us with a link to websites, one of which attacks Oregon department of transport for its delaying tactics. One anti-tolls billboard that has appeared in Oregon states, “Study. Study the study. Study the study of the study. Then study that study. After that, add five years and plan for a new study. Then be sure to throw out the old study. Oops, sorry, time to retire.” This billboard expresses frustration at the transport authority’s failure to tackle congestion in the town. Campaigners say that in desperation, the transport authority has now commissioned a $20 million study into tolls roads and a bypass. Meanwhile, in Scotland, the Executive has began its second review of tolls bridges—which is not expected to be completed until around the time of next year’s Holyrood elections. Those objecting to tolls on the Forth and Tay can Email the Executive’s bridges review at tolledbridges@scotland.gsi.gov.uk. Letters should be sent to Scottish Executive, Road Pricing Team, Area 2d North, Victoria Quay, Edinburgh. The deadline is tomorrow. |
