Abbey key to month of archaeology

DUNFERMLINE ABBEY is just one of the venues taking part in this year’s Scottish Archaeology Month in September.

In support, Historic Scotland is holding several free events around the country that will give the public a chance to find out more about archaeology and the evidence it reveals about the past.

There will be specialist tours at Dunfermline Abbey, Craignethan Castle, Huntly Castle, Elcho Castle and Whithorn Priory.

These one-off tours will be led by a member of the inspectorate team—specialists in the architecture and archaeology of the site.

The Dunfermline Abbey tours will be held at 10am and 2pm on Friday, September 8, when specialist Richard Fawcett takes visitors on a tour to find out about its history and explore the site where some of Scotland’s kings and queens were buried.

There will also be a behind the scenes update on the Stirling Castle project with project leader Doreen Grove at 11am and 2pm on September 23 and 24.

Tours last around an hour and are free, but booking is essential. Call the interpretation unit on 0131 668 8600 or Email hs. interpretation@.gsi.gov.uk
