Armed robberies at hotel and shop

MASKED GUNMEN robbed a hotel on the outskirts of Dundee in one of two armed robberies in the city last night.

Two men wearing masks and dark clothing entered the Premier Travel Inn at Panmurefield Village at 10.30pm and presented a firearm at staff before taking a sum of money.

The pair then ran off and it is believed that at least one of them attempted to steal a vehicle from the Hamilton Street area as he tried to make his getaway.

Earlier in the evening, a newsagent in Dundee was held up by a knife-wielding robber who made off with a three-figure sum of cash.

No one was hurt in either incident.

Police set up roadblocks and questioned drivers along both the Kingsway and the A92 to Arbroath in the wake of the hotel robbery.

Guests arriving at the hotel to check in were sent to the Bell Tree Inn next door as inquiries into the robbery began.

Forensic teams arrived to scour the hotel for clues around 11pm.

The incident occurred less than four hours after the robbery at the Ferry Road newsagents on Broughty Ferry Road.

A man entered the premises around 6.15pm and threatened staff with a knife. After grabbing cash in various denominations, he ran off east along Ferry Road.

Police warned last night that the man may be dangerous and should not be approached.

The robber is described as aged 20 to 22, around 5ft 8in, skinny and very pale.

He was wearing a navy blue tammy, blue jeans and a pale blue jumper over a blue and white checked shirt.

Detectives investigating the robbery said they were keen to speak to the driver, and any passengers, of a light green car, though to be a Citroen estate, seen driving east along Broughty Ferry Road at the time of the robbery.

Anyone who has information regarding the hotel robbery or was in Broughty Ferry Road at around 6.15pm is asked to contact police on 223200 or speak to any officer.

* Police are still hunting two armed robbers who stole almost £1000 from a busy Dundee pub last week.

The robbers entered the Nether Inn around 2.45pm on August 21 and threatened staff with a firearm. They escaped with nearly 1000 pound coins.
