Beaming MSPs set to return to chamber

MSPS WILL BE BACK in action in the Scottish Parliament debating chamber this afternoon—six months after a roof beam broke loose and ended up dangling over the head of politicians.

The total cost of the fault, including hiring temporary accommodation, is in excess of £500,000.

The chamber was declared a danger area after the beam swung loose in March and parliamentary business had to be conducted in a former church and later in a committee room at Holyrood.

MSPs and the public were later allowed back into the chamber after the beams were temporarily made safe with strapping.

During the summer 128 stainless steel dowels have been installed in all 64 beams, or struts, to keep the complex roof structure secure.

Parliament officials have said they are trying to recoup the costs to the taxpayer arising from the fault.
