Feared for life during robbery

Police working at the scene yesterday.

A Dundee NEWSAGENT feared for her 72-year-old husband’s life as he was assaulted and robbed during a raid at their store yesterday afternoon.

Bill Gunning (72) was too shaken to speak about his ordeal after thieves went behind the counter and stole a three-figure sum from the till.

He struggled with the robbers —a man in his late 20s/early 30s and woman in her 20s—who overpowered him and ran off west along Arbroath Road.

Police descended on The Kiosk at the junction of Arbroath Road and Dalkeith Road shortly after 2.35pm and began searching the area.

Bill and Rita Gunning have owned the newsagent for 18 years.

Mr Gunning was in the premises on his own when the thieves struck as his wife was buying goods at the cash and carry shop.

Mrs Gunning said, “I was just scared that it could have given him a heart attack. It could have killed him.

“There’s too many of these robberies going on. You think it won’t happen to you.

“Bill’s shaken up but he’s okay.”

Amid all the drama and police activity, Mrs Gunning continued to sell newspapers outside the kiosk while scenes of crime officers carried out a detailed examination inside.

Police said the male suspect had short dark hair and was wearing a fawn Stone Island jacket with a patch on the left arm.

The female was 5ft 4in to 5ft 5in with dark hair tied back. She was wearing dark clothing and carrying a white handbag.
