THE BODY of a Perth teenager who jumped off the Queens Bridge 10 days ago was recovered from the River Tay at the weekend. Craig Robertson (17), who is believed to have been a student at Perth College, had been missing since September 21. Several searches have since been made of the Tay and at 9.40am on Saturday members of Tayside Fisheries, assisted by members of the St Andrews coastguard rescue team, located Craig’s body upstream from Inchyra Sailing Club at Inchyra, near Glencarse. Craig’s parents Brian and Fiona Robertson issued a statement on Saturday night through the police in which they thanked the volunteers who helped in the searches. A police spokesperson said, “Craig’s family are extremely grateful for the support received and would like to thank everyone in today’s operation. “They would also like to thank everyone involved in the initial search—and in particular the two canoeists who tried to rescue Craig near to the Queens Bridge.” The groups taking part in the searches were Broughty Ferry Lifeboats, Forth Coastguard, Tayside Fisheries, Perthshire and Newburgh sailing clubs along with the Perth Civil Service Sailing Club and Perth Water Ski Club. More than 50 volunteers were involved in a land and river search. The circumstances of Craig’s death, thought to be suicide, will be reported to the procurator fiscal in Perth. Flowers and cards have been left by friends of Craig on the bridge over the last few days. |
