THE THIRD Blairgowrie and East Perthshire Walking Festival formally opened with a reception in the Royal Hotel, Blairgowrie, on Friday. Representing Provost Bob Scott, local councillor Bob Ellis, who is chairman of the walking festival organising committee, welcomed walkers from all over Scotland and parts of England and Ireland. Guests enjoyed a buffet prepared by chef Tony Neil featuring produce donated by local businesses. Festival events started with a taster walk over Hatton Hill and Bonnington, while Saturday’s walks included the Cateran Trail Expedition and four others including a historical walk around Alyth and a ceilidh in the evening. Today sees another five walks, including a rock climbing experience and a Big Tree Country walk. In the evening there will be a quiz with the questions, more or less, on hills, paths, and the great outdoors, hosted by Blairgowrie Hillwalking Club. Tomorrow there will be another five walks including a return visit to Bamff Estate to see wild boar, and a historical walk around Meigle. The last day of the festival on Wednesday brings a historical walk around Coupar Angus and another round the Bandirran circuit near Balbeggie, before a spit roast party in the grounds of the Altamount House Hotel.
