LEVENMOUTH WAR veteran Richard Martin celebrated his 100th birthday with a family day trip to Leuchars. Originally a Londoner, Mr Martin was the second youngest of seven children and is the last surviving sibling. He joined the air force as a young man and was posted to Fife, where he was a flight sergeant for 26 years. He met his wife, Catherine, in Tayport and the couple married in the early 1930s at Scoonie Church. They had a son, Richard, two grandchildren, Gillian and Stuart and two great-grandchildren. Sadly, Catherine passed away in 1966 and Gillian died in August. A former member of Scoonie Golf Club, Mr Martin was a keen golfer until only two years ago. He latterly worked as a joiner/ carpenter with McIntosh’s in Kirkcaldy until he retired. Mr Martin jnr said, “My father had a wonderful day at Leuchars where he tried out a jet aircraft and reminisced about days gone by in the air force. “Despite his age, he is very mobile and independent, although he is a little deaf. “He enjoyed celebrating his special birthday with the family. It was sad that Gillian was not there to celebrate with us but she is forever in our thoughts.” Mr Martin was presented with flowers by local councillor Andrew Keddie and Depute Lieutenant Bill Moodie. |
