White stag becoming star draw

VISITORS TO Highland Perthshire could be forgiven for thinking they have stumbled into the magical land of Narnia this winter, when they come face to face with a rare white stag roaming around the hills.

The young fallow deer has been spotted by visitors to the Dunkeld area during the rutting season and, according to one local businessman, they have been literally stopping in their tracks to stare at it.

Graham Clark of Highland Offroad and Land Rover Experience Centre said the deer has been seen roaming on both the nearby Hilton Hotel grounds and neighbouring estates and has become a star draw.

“He said, “We’ve introduced the Wild Perthshire tour which takes in some of its most breathtaking scenery as well as its diverse and exciting wildlife. Clients always see a variety of furry and feathered inhabitants, but it’s the white stag that is proving the most popular.

“I’ve seen him several times and he really is an impressive sight. He’s been running with other young stags during the rutting season but now that’s drawing to a close he’s roaming solo again. Clients literally stop in their tracks when they see him.”

Fallow deer have a range of coat colours and while white is not unique it is by no means a common sight.

Graham is considering adding more vehicles to the Wild Perthshire tours due to the growth in business.
