Fish-shaped boat old hat to Beano fans

The Iron Fish from the 1952 Beano annual.

READERS MAY have seen the recent publicity about the “revolutionary” new submersible boat that is shaped like a dolphin and which can leap out of the water.

But as any Beano reader of a certain age will tell you, there’s nothing new about it.

Deep-Sea Danny’s Iron Fish first appeared as a story illustrated by Jack Glass in the comic in 1949, with Danny piloting a metal swordfish invented by his father Professor Gray. It also featured in the Beano annual of 1952.

The Iron Fish could swim, dive and leap into the air—and did so every week in the comic until 1966 (the drawing having been taken over by Bill Holroyd), taking Danny on a series of adventures.

The SeaBreacher, from American designer Rob Innes and his business partner Dan Piazza, is almost identical, apart from the nose, to the Iron Fish as is its forerunner the Sweet Virgin Angel.

Rob’s boat can travel at 30mph on the surface and 20mph under water—and, like the Iron Fish, leap out of the water.

We wonder if Rob and Dan will get up to as many high jinks as did Danny Gray.
