Police seek witnesses after fatal cliff plunge

THE BODY of a woman has been recovered from the water at the foot of the cliffs at Arbroath.

The woman who was in her 60s is believed to have fallen from the cliffs, in an area known as Mariner’s Grave, about 11.30am on Saturday.

Police said yesterday there were no suspicious circumstances. They were still seeking formal identification of the woman and notifying her next of kin.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

It is believed the coastguards were alerted and they called on Arbroath lifeboat, which was diverted from a training exercise. The inshore lifeboat was used to get in to recover the body.

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area between 11am and 11.30am, and who may have seen the woman prior to her death, to get in touch.

At the time of the incident there were a number of dog walkers in the area.

Police are particularly keen to speak to an elderly man who was with a boy, and were seen walking in the area.

It is thought it may be possible they witnessed the incident taking place.

Anyone who was in the area at the time should get in touch with the police on 01307 302200.
