Cash appeal for crash victims

A FUND HAS been set up in aid of two Polish migrant workers, bound for Angus, who were injured in the fatal bus crash near Heathrow Airport last week.

Krzysztof Skulimowski (41) and his daughter Magda (21), were travelling to a farm near Carnoustie to take up work when they were involved in the crash that claimed two lives.

Local couple David Ireland and wife Barbara, herself from Poland, quickly set about establishing a relief fund to help the two Poles and their family through the difficult months ahead.

It is understood Mr Skulimowski incurred serious head and internal injuries, while his daughter has a broken leg and pelvis.

Father and daughter are being treated at separate hospitals in London.

Mr Skulimowski was rushed to Chertsey Hospital, while his daughter was taken to Heathrow Hospital.

Mrs Ireland said Mr Skulimowski’s wife, Iwona, is stuck in Poland with limited means to travel.

“The family’s personal circumstances are difficult so we want to help them out,” she said.

“We don’t know how long Krzysztof is going to be in hospital because his condition is quite, quite serious.

“We don’t know if Iwona will be able to come to London yet because we need accommodation for a fairly lengthy period and she doesn’t speak English.

“She is basically stuck at the moment.

“It looks like Magda may be out (of hospital) in a few weeks but who knows when they’ll be able to get back to work?

“They’ll need financial assistance.”

The Irelands help bring migrant workers to local farms through their connections in Poland.

Mr Ireland said money and the offer of accommodation in London for Mrs Skulimowski has already come in.

The condition of former Dundee FC player Jimmy Toner—husband of Christina (76), who lost her life in the crash—is not serious, Thames Valley Police said yesterday.

His former club last night wished Mr Toner a speedy recovery.

A spokesman said scores of former players who played alongside Mr Toner have been in touch with the club to inquire about his condition.

“Our thoughts are with Jimmy at this time,” he added.

“We send him our best wishes for a quick recovery and we hope to see him soon.”
