Jail for two in £100,000 heroin raid

TWO FIFE men have been jailed after heroin worth more than £100,000 was found during a police raid in Methil last year.

David Anthony Affleck (35) and Michael Laing (39), both of Kirk Park, Methil, had previously admitted several drugs offences which related to the significant seizure at a house in Hawthorn Street on July 3.

Affleck was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment by judge Lord McPhail at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday while Laing, who was a first offender, was jailed for four-and-a-half years.

The court heard that both men had been the subject of a lengthy intelligence-led police operation after the public became suspicious about their activities.

After the tip-offs, detectives who had kept watch on Affleck saw a package being handed into his car and subsequently followed him as he drove to meet his co-accused.

Both men had been dividing a kilo of heroin into smaller deals in Affleck’s bathroom when police raided and the men had subsequently tried to flush the consignment down the toilet.

At a previous hearing in December, advocate depute Robert Weir, prosecuting, told the High Court in Edinburgh, “Laing’s hands were wet as if he had tried to dispose of material in the toilet.”

Detective Inspector Neil Kerr, head of the Fife Police drug squad, said, “Fife Constabulary is committed to tackling drug dealers in our communities.

“This recent seizure and subsequent conviction will send a message to those involved in drugs supply that they will be caught. It’s only a matter of time.

“Fife Constabulary relies on information provided from the Fife public, identifying those who are involved in the distribution of drugs.”

DI Kerr also appealed to anyone who might have information regarding drug crimes to call Fife Police on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
