NO, THERE’S nothing wrong with the steeple at St Bryce Kirk in Kirkcaldy.
Over the last few days Langtonian’s have been gazing skyward, jaws often agape, at the sight of steeplejacks dangling at the top of the 200ft structure, which is one of Kirkcaldy’s finest landmarks.
Many wondered if the recent gales had inflicted damage on the 126-year-old spire—after all, the Town House weather vane was left askew and has now been carted off for repairs.
Quite a few have wandered into the kirk to ask what was afoot above their heads.
“It’s just routine maintenance work,” said centre manager Ann Winters, with the hint of a sigh as she answered that same question—again.
“A lot of people have come in and asked but it’s a planned part of a five-year maintenance programme, that’s all.
“It’s nothing to do with the high winds.”
With that settled, second question. What on earth possesses people to become steeplejacks...?
