Skiers and boarders out at all centres

SCOTTISH SKI centres had another good day yesterday with more than 1500 skiers and boarders and another 200 or so sightseers.

CairnGorm Mountain Ltd tied for numbers with The Lecht with 400 winter sport enthusiasts at each but CairnGorm also benefited from 130-plus visitors sightseeing.

CairnGorm spokeswoman Helen Wink said, “We have superb skiing and it was clear for much of the day. You can ski to the base station and the only fly in the ointment was the severe wind chill factor at the top of the mountain.”

In addition to the funicular railway, another four uplifts were running.

The Lecht had just over half of their 15 uplifts in action and there were some strong winds. There was also some new drifting snow which could act as a reserve if the weather changes.

Glencoe had another good day with all lifts operating and around 250 up the mountain. It was cold and bright with just light winds but there were snow flurries and some mist later.

Angela MacLeod said, “All runs are complete although some lower ones are thinner but there is good cover for beginners.”

Glenshee operated nine of its 20 uplifts with good cover of groomed powder snow on the runs, although some were thin in parts.

Spokesman Stewart Davidson said, “The best skiing is on Carn Aosda and Butcharts with Sunnyside best for intermediates. There is also ample snow for beginners.

“We had blue skies and sunshine and virtually no wind until the afternoon.”

Nevis Range was also busy with over 230 skiers and over 40 “gondoliers” on a day when the gondola system and six other uplifts ran.

There was good visibility and skiers enjoyed packed powdery snow with great skiing, particularly on the main runs at the front of the mountain.
