A MAN was rushed to hospital in Dundee on Saturday after falling from the moving coach that was carrying him and members of a Celtic Supporters Club home to Greenock from the SPL match against Aberdeen.
The man, who has not been named, was on board the Dunn’s Coaches vehicle returning from the lunchtime kick-off at Pittodrie when he fell on to one of Dundee’s busiest roads.
The coach had been travelling southbound along Pitkerro Road and was turning west on to the Kingsway when the man appears to have fallen from the door.
Emergency services rushed to the scene to discover a large crowd of shocked bus passengers and residents surrounding the man and blocking the road.
The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital while officers interviewed coach passengers and crash investigators recorded evidence at the scene.
However, it appears that the man enjoyed a lucky escape after police initially feared he had suffered serious injuries. After being treated by doctors, police confirmed his condition was not life threatening.
It is understood he suffered concussion, bruising and several cuts, which required stitches.
A spokesman for Tayside Police said the man would remain in hospital until later this week.
Other passengers had to make alternative travel arrangements to return home as police towed the Dunn’s coach away for further examination.
The throng of supporters headed through the Stobswell area on their way to the city centre.
However they refused to reveal any details about what had happened on the bus or which branch of Celtic supporters club they were from.
One man, who did not wish to be named, said, “It’s a total nightmare. We hope he’s going to be okay. We don’t want to talk about what has happened. We’ve told the police everything there is to know.
“We’re just going to make our own way home on buses and trains.”
No one was available for comment on behalf of Dunn’s Coaches despite repeated attempts to contact them.
The accident caused widespread traffic disruption in Dundee as police were forced to close the section of the Kingsway between Pitkerro Road roundabout and Forfar Road roundabout, diverting motorists along Old Craigie Road for over an hour.
The diversion was lifted shortly after 5.20pm with the single-deck cream and orange coach towed away from the Kingsway shortly after 6.30pm.
