Anglers stage memorial match for a lost friend

ABOUT 30 SHORE anglers from all over the north-east of Scotland took part in a fishing competition yesterday to honour the memory of a fellow enthusiast who died last year when he was swept off rocks south of Aberdeen and to raise funds for the Arbroath RNLI station.

David Dewar (40), who was from Arbroath but lived in Brechin where he worked as a carpet fitter with local firm Blacks, went missing from the rocks near Portlethen in February last year while he was taking part in an angling competition. Yesterday’s event was organised by his friend and fellow angler Jake Chalmers and the north-east region of the Scottish Federation of Sea Anglers.

The anglers fished from the shore between Carnoustie and Ferryden and Tam Clunie from Dundee became the first winner of the David Dewar Memorial Quaich for the heaviest fish of the day—a 71/2lb cod.

Instead of paying to enter the competition, the participants were asked to make a donation to the Arbroath lifeboat crew training appeal and £335 was raised.

At the end of the competition, the anglers met at the Commercial Inn in Arbroath where they were joined by members of the lifeboat crew and Mr Dewar’s parents Jim and Liz.

Mr Dewar presented Mr Clunie with his trophy and his wife handed over the cash raised to Arbroath lifeboat crew member Keith Swankie.

Mr Chalmers said, “Davie had many, many friends in the angling community and we decided to hold this competition, which we hope will become an annual fixture on our calendar, in his memory and to take the opportunity to raise some money for the RNLI.”
