A DUNDEE man serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of a 47-year-old man in 2004 has been found dead in his prison cell.
Craig Findlay (37) was found dead at HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire on Sunday. The Scottish Prison Service has said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
In August 2004, a jury at the High Court in Perth took less than 90 minutes to find Findlay guilty of murdering George McGowan in a frenzied attack in Dundee.
They had been told that Mr McGowan had died in Ballantrae Terrace in April that year after receiving at least two dozen stamping blows and kicks in the stairwell of a tenement.
Findlay was also seen ramming his bicycle on top of his victim.
Eighteen of Mr McGowan’s ribs were fractured in the attack and both his lungs had collapsed.
Findlay then rode away from the scene on his bicycle and was seen to spit at Mr McGowan.
He shouted that the next time he would kill him.
At Findlay’s sentencing in August 2004, judge Lady Smith ordered him to spend a minimum of 12 years in jail.
Findlay had earlier spent time in prison for an assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement in 1997.
The SPS said yesterday a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held.
