NCR staff may start leaving by weekend

MORE THAN 600 workers at Dundee’s NCR plant have been invited by the company to apply for a written quotation of the redundancy terms they will be offered.

The company is understood to have distributed paperwork to its workforce yesterday which spells out the procedure involved.

Amicus union representative Gillian McKay said it was likely most of the 616 faced with losing their jobs would ask for a quote to see what offer was on the table.

NCR said last night that no employees left the business yesterday, but said it was conceivable that some individuals would do so by the end of the week.

A spokesperson said employees applying for redundancy were being asked to give a date they wished to leave and NCR would then consider the request.

Ms McKay said the 90-day statutory redundancy period was still running and negotiations between the union and management were continuing to see if more jobs might be saved.

Last week it was announced that there would be 34 fewer redundancies than anticipated.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Response Group (RRG) at NCR yesterday agreed a timetable for group staff meetings that will pave the way for one-to-one meetings with redundancy-threatened workers starting next week.

The first groups of employees at the factory will meet the RRG tomorrow with further meetings scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

The NCR workers now know the terms of the redundancy packages being offered by the company and this has allowed the RRG to press ahead with its mission to help staff find alternative employment or training.

The group secured £1.5 million in funding from the Scottish Executive last month to set the ball rolling on its 21-point action plan, but has had to wait on the sidelines until redundancy negotiations were concluded.
