THE REDEVELOPMENT of one of Dundee’s favourite buildings is progressing well, according to the convener of the council’s leisure and arts services.
Councillor Charles Farquhar yesterday visited the McManus Galleries to see how the £9 million project was faring.
Work began on August 14 last year following the decanting of the city’s art and artefacts collection.
The main contractor, Muirfield Contracts, has completely stripped out the galleries, undertaken extensive investigation work, underpinned the south-west corner of the building and started the construction of the new stair following demolition of the original one, as well as re-slating and re-pointing work.
In addition, the environmental works contractor, Torith, has begun external landscaping on the square.
Mr Farquhar said, “Work is progressing well and a report will be going to the next leisure and arts committee to outline additional essential work, including the protection of the stained glass, slating and underpinning, that will cost about £300,000.”
