ADAM SMITH College in Kirkcaldy received a special delivery in the post yesterday—a new £20 note from the Bank of England with the imprinted image of its namesake.
The note was sent by Bank of England Governer Mervyn King, who remained true to his word.
Mr King had said during a Fife lecture last October that Adam Smith, the Kirkcaldy-born father of economics, would be the first Scotsman to appear on a Bank of England note.
The bank note received by the college was the 10th note printed, with the serial number 000010.
College principal Dr Craig Thomson said, “It was a great surprise to receive this very special bank note personally from the governor of the Bank of England.
“Having Adam Smith appear on the £20 note is a very fitting tribute to his work.
“His influence on modern thinking is recognised throughout the world,” he added, “and although he was born nearly 300 years ago, he is still making his mark in the world of finance.
“As a college we are proud to have the name Adam Smith.”
He said the note would be given pride of place in the college for all students, staff and visitors to view.
