Bike death man’s dying mother speaks of her shock

THE DYING mother of a 21-year-old Dundee man who was killed in a motorcycle accident last week has spoken of her shock at losing him.

George Keddie was a pillion passenger on a Honda motorbike that left the road last Monday and crashed into a tree at Balmashanner Hill near Forfar, where he had been living. Both he and the driver were thrown from the bike in the collision.

The accident claimed George’s life while the driver of the motorcycle suffered chest injuries, although these were not life threatening.

The pair were riding on a dirt track without helmets when the accident occurred. A report has been sent to the procurator fiscal in connection with the incident, as occurs in all fatal road accidents.

George’s mother Jean has been diagnosed with colon cancer and doctors have only given her a few weeks to live.

Now those weeks will be spent mourning for her son. Speaking from her home in Fintry on Saturday, Jean said, “I was the last person to know. All I know is that the person who was driving the motorbike is alive and my son is not.

“No one should have to die at his age.”

George attended Fintry Primary School and Morgan Academy. He last saw his mother four weeks ago but Jean said he had been settling down in Forfar.

She said, “George phoned me and said he had just found a job. He’d also just got a new girlfriend.”

George’s father John said he hoped that his son’s death would prompt other motorcyclists to think of their own safety and wear helmets.

He said, “Other children should take heed—it is not safe to ride without a helmet. He had been in trouble before but George was a great lad and didn’t deserve this.

“He was just a normal guy for someone his age—he liked music and cars.

“I had to go and identify him. I just touched his face, stroked his hair and called him a silly boy. Then I went outside and cried.”

George’s funeral will take place today at Dundee Crematorium.

He is survived by John and Jean and his siblings Marie, Samantha, Gordon, Graham and Steven.
