Incident puts player in hospital

A Fife footballer is understood to have suffered a broken jaw in an incident during a game in Star of Markinch on Saturday.

Midfielder David McNeil (22) was playing for Kettle United against Star Hearts when he was apparently struck by an opponent.

Kettle manager Graeme Turnbull said, “Players drew the referee’s attention to the fact that David was lying on the ground.

“It seems he was punched by a Star player and had a bad facial injury—we think a double fracture of the jaw.

“He was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy and later transferred to Queen Margaret in Dunfermline where he was due to have an operation yesterday.”

David joined Kettle United this season, having previously played for Star Hearts.

Last night, police confirmed they were investigating the incident.
