Weekend strike hits mail deliveries

MAIL DELIVERIES to the north-east of Scotland were hit at the weekend after staff at an Edinburgh delivery office took unofficial strike action.

However, the Royal Mail said yesterday the situation had been resolved and any delays in the processing of mail were minimal.

The problems began when a number of staff walked out of the Edinburgh Mail Centre on Friday night in a dispute over working practices.

The office is the sorting hub for mail for Dundee, Angus Perthshire and Fife and the dispute caused some disruption to the delivery process.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said workers were back at their posts on Sunday and any backlog was being dealt with as swiftly as possible.

She said that because the strike had occurred at the weekend it had caused fewer problems than it would have done during the week as only a skeleton shift were due to work at the centre on Saturday anyway.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “A number of Royal Mail staff at Edinburgh Mail Centre took unofficial industrial action on Friday night.

“This may cause a slight delay to some mail reaching Dundee and Angus but contingencies are in place to ensure the disruption is minimised.”
